    > at the top of my page

    I have a > symbol at the top of my index page and can not for the life of me figure out where it is coming from.

    It also causes about a 1"-2" gap at the top of the page even though my build page is set to "0".

    That means one of your scripts is messed up, possibly missing the final ">" at the end. Probably something you put in an html box with the BV tool, so scroll through all your html boxes until you find the offender.
