creating a new file with file manager

I want to install a script in my public_html folder I need to create a new (ht) and an (index) files when I save them I want to save them in Perl format......

do I save them as ht.pl and index.pl or does the file manager automatically do that

what is the format supported on the servers? is it .cgi or .pl or .php when you save the file under Perl in the file manager?
