what are the uses of MYSQL, newbie question

I plan to have a news page in my website and i would like to save all old news by date (day/month/year) to let people consult the material if they wish to do so, i would like to know if this is one of the uses of the database?

yes, this is a perfect use for a database. Check google or hotscripts.com for a motd (message of the day) or news script.
