Menu/index like this --Item (27)-- is it possible.

Hi, has anyone seen indexing/menu software that makes up an index like this
Accessories (21)
Books (56)
Comics (121)
I can find lots of programs with it built in, but not the software that generates it.
It will be used for an articles area on site, and as I add another article the index will increase by 1 on the index menu. Or is this only possible with a database package.
