Graphic in address bar

More and more, when I browse the web, tiny icons, usually logos, are appearing in front of the web address that I enter in the address bar in IExplorer.

First, what is this thing called. 2nd, how do I add one?

an easy way to create a favicon is to use the favicon generator found here. Real easy to use and will and is explained simply what you have to do.
