Problems with image storage.

I have come across a problem in that the images on my web site are stored in a BlueVoda folder as well as My Pictures folder which is eating up space on my C drive. If I move the image from either folder, it doesnt appear when I publish the page. How can I use just one folder so that I can free up some space on my hard drive?

Hi, You could get another hard drive. If it’s slowing up your machine that much? I would imagine it nearly time for one. But once you have moved them they will have to be relined with your pages again.

Thanks for the reply. If I do that I will get a copy in the BlueVoda folder and a copy on the new hard drive. I am trying to avoid having 2 copies of the same image.

This is what I would do. I would open up all my .bvp files, re-insert your images, those being the images that land in your BlueVoda/Images on your computer and republish my pages - I would then burn my original images found in My Pictures folder of your own computer to disc - and I would upload all of my pictures to a free storage place on the internet as well - you can find a few good ones ... and they can stay there forever, you will have the smaller images that are on your website all organized with what are on your website .. This will free up this space on your hard drive that you are looking to do ... you might consider doing the same for your music if you have many stored on your computer - this also takes up space, then I would even do a defrag on my computer after I tidied other things up too ... I should say too that you can get a 1gb memory stick for $9.99 - at this price they can become the small filing system in your house - hmm ... a new idea, create a memory stick holder just as cd holders, cassette holders and video holders have - well there might already be those and I have just never seen them ... anyway .. rambling now, lol ..

Bluevoda gathers the files in one central place so that it knows where to look when publishing. You cannot prevent this unless maybe if you store your files in /images in the first place.
I don't know how that will work, it just sounds logical that if the files are stored there originally it wont have to move/duplicate them when publishing.

I now have over 15,000 images and videos and music samples that I have had to create or use since using BV. Building sites for other people means losing MY space on MY PC. It is a real bind I must admit. As mentioned above, if you remove them or store them on an external drive which I did once... You have to repoint all the images again, and in my case that took me nearly six months!

It would be nice if once published to the server you could delete them from your PC, but I don't know if that will ever happen, or indeed be possible?

Yes, you can delete them from your PC. However, when working on the pages you will get an "image not found" warning wherever an image is supposed to be. But, the image will be on your server and the web page will display perfectly.

You can, by taking advantage of the storage allowances of your VH account (I challenge anyone to come close to topping off the storage capacity of each VodaHost account): Simply create a new folder in your My Documents called "Working Photos" which will serve as your 'temporary photo folder' and as a constant root source.....AND create a folder in your server account also named "Working Photos" ....

Whenever you prepare photos (cropping, sizing, titling, etc.) during a round of designing pages, be sure to drop them into this folder prior to importing them onto your pages >> this way, each time you publish a page, the root source will always be c:// - your computer path here - /My Documents/Your Name/Working Photos
* The key hint here in the preparations is to title each image using both natural and "relevant' words, as well as unique coding so you can instantly recognize which site/page they belong to .... you will see the importance of this below.

After you publish your page and you are done with your photo-session, FTP up each photo into your server account Folder (which will store the duplicates, as your published images are saved independently already). Then, you are free to delete (empty the folder) then from your local system, freeing up your HD space.

Whenever you need to tweak or change a site or page, get into the habit of first re-populating your local "Working Photos" folder by copying down the photos you will need ..... this is why it can be necessary to title then with an identifier. Or, if you do not mind the extra 2 minutes it will take, simply create a folder within your Working Photos folder named for each site (and the same for your archive on the server) to keep them neat and organized, and remember to maintain the heirarchy when re-establishing the sessions.

At first, it may seem laborious, but quickly you will find this a simple system to "logically think through" and will actually add to a broader understanding of both computers and methodologies you will encounter as you evolve online.

This practice needs to be followed precisely as outlined, for your storing of data must be proven to relate directly to the current websites/pages of your VodaHost account --- "data dumping" or surriptitious storing of irrelevant data/ creating an "online archive" is strictly forbidden by VH TOS!

Hi Vasili,

Yes I was aware of this, howevere, as you also mention, it is a pain when having to reload them back up to your pointed folder everytime you want to amend a site. I did give this a go a few months back but it just became too much of a pain.

What I do now is store them on my D drive, keeping 'C' free. Ocassionally I'll open up a page though and all pictures are missing, but just repointing one of them seems to suddenly produce all pics again?

There is an alternative that will , tidy your sever up no end, faster upload of your pages to the sever. & force users of BV to place images of the correct size on there web pages.
This will also allow you to transfer files to other computers with ease & not have to worry about images. The only fiddly side might be using BV shapes. But i tend to use tables for my shape's for a faster loading page.

Put all your images in a folder on site & use the code below in a html box.
You can make the html box the size of your image just to help with page design.

Right, Chris.....that is a great alternative for just the reasons you mentioned (although for many it might be a bit more complicated, as it seems for anything with HTML or scripts), as is the use of a flash drive......and this suggestion not only delivers great presentation results, but solves the issue of "relation to site" with regard to storing. It is the method I use, in fact, and has served me well for over a year!
